A very Mean Man
Characters:Jack, Tom, Henry, Johnson
Storyteller:Jack is very mean. He always borrows things from the others and seldom returns, he never lends things to others.
(Jack stands outside Tom’s door and knocks at it. Tom cleans the house.)
Jack: Tom? Open the door!
Tom: Who’s that?
Jack: This is Jack, my dear Tom.
Tom: (Open the door) Oh, Jack, anything I can do for you?
Jack:Oh, yes. Hum…, I need to clean my house, but my mop has been broken, you see. So I want to borrow yours.
Tom:Ok, here you are.
Jack:Thank you so much.
(Jack goes with the mop happily. Tom shakes his head with a bitter smile.)
Storyteller:Three weeks has passed, Jack hasn’t returned Tom’s mop. Tom has to get it himself. Tom knocks at the door.
Tom:Hi, Jack, this is Tom. I need to use my mop, so I …
(Jack stops him and hides the mop quickly)
Jack: Oh, I’m sorry, my dear friend, I’d like to invite you home and give back your mop but I’m so busy that I even have no time to open the door for you. Oh, I’m extremely sorry.
(Tom stomps his feet angrily and goes home. Jack smiles secretly, then the bell rings.)
Henry:This is Henry.
Jack: (Open the door) What’s the matter?
Henry:I want to borrow a book from you. I used to have one, but I can’t find it now. I know you have one.
Jack: Perhaps I used to, but not now.
Henry:But I saw it yesterday evening, it’s just, on your bookshelf.
Jack:No, I have no book to lend you. (Jack closes the door very quickly.)
(Henry goes away furiously.)
Storyteller:One day, Jack goes for a walk with a new friend, Johnson, by the river. Suddenly he falls into the water.
Jack: (Wave his hands and shouts) Help! Help! I can’t swim!
Johnson: Hey, Jack, give me your hand, I will take you out!
Jack: You are a bad man. I’m in danger, but you want to take my hand? No! I’ll never give you anything of mine.
Johnson: But I want to help you out!
Storyteller: Jack is stuck on refusing to give his hand to Johnson. At this time, Tom comes.
Tom: You are a selfish man. You expect other people to give to you, but you don’t give to other people. Why should we help you?
Jack:Please save me! You’ll see that I can change my ways. Just help me out before I drown!
Tom: Then give Johnson your hand because he is kind enough to offer his help to you. He will pull you out.
Jack:I won’t give my hand!
Tom:Then, we will let you drown. You are not worth saving because you don’t share with others!
(Tom and Johnson start to walk away.)
Jack(Yells): Stop! I promise to change. I will share all I have with you. Just pull me out of here!
Storyteller:Johnson takes his hands quickly, and he is saved. From then on, Jack decides he’d better change his behavior and stop being so selfish.
Jack:My dear friends, I know I have many shortcomings, but I swear I will discard those bad habits. Please believe me. I need your friendship.
Tom, Johnson and Henry: OK! Jack, we are friends and we’ll be good friends forever.
